CCC
at Riverside
The CCC
were responsible for much of the recreational facilities we enjoy and take for granted at
Riverside State Park. Every time we drive into the park on Aubrey L. White Parkway, or
cross the swinging bridge, or visit the park office or one of the restrooms in the park,
we are enjoying the fruits of the long and challenging labor of the CCC at Riverside.
A list of their projects does
not do justice the tremendous amount of hand work that each project entailed:
Swinging Bridge at Bowl and Pitcher
Kitchen Shelter at Bowl and
Pitcher
Rock Restroom at Bowl and
Pitcher
Park residence, current
office, and maintenance shop at Bowl and Pitcher
Rock
wall along much of Aubrey L. White
Parkway, both east of the river and on the west side. For that matter, much of the roadway
itself!
Rock restroom on the
Centennial Trail near the Carlson Trailhead
Trails around the park.
The CCC crew lived at Camp Seven Mile, a short distance south of the Wilbur
Trail head just off Seven Mile road near the west end of Seven Mile Bridge. Many of the
foundations of the buildings that were built are still in existance. The tall stone
fireplace is still standing. A nearby kiosk tells the story of the CCC, and the stories of
the men who lived here, as told in their own words. This area was dedicated in 1999, sixty
years later, in a special ceremony attended by several of the camp residents!
