Generally, Spokane is in a
modified western continental climate. What that means is relatively warm to hot summers,
cold winters, with rainfall averaging about 16 inches annually. The air is relatively dry,
with fairly low humidity. Spokane's weather is not as desert-like as the Columbia Basin to
the west, nor as cold and snowy as winter in the mountains to the east. It is actually a
VERY DELIGHTFUL climate.
Season by season:
Spring:
If you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes. Change is constant. It can
snow in May, it can be 80 degrees in March. Usually, however, the days are warm, 60 - 70
degrees, and the nights cool, from around freezing up to the 50's. Oftentimes, when it's
raining in Seattle, it's partly cloudy and warm in Spokane.
Summer:
Temperatures climb into the 80's and 90's, and rarely into the low 100's, but
storms may bring them back into the 70's. Evenings are mild, in the 50's to low 60's
usually. Rain is rare, but an occasional storm will pass through.
Fall:
Some call fall the best time of the year. Temperatures are in the 60's to 80's,
and skies are usually clear for long periods of time. Evenings are cool and frosty.
Winter:
Snow is variable in the Spokane area. Some years it arrives in November and lies
on the ground in some form until March. Other years receive occasional snows, which then
melt in a few days. Most snows are not deep, just a few inches at a time. Temperatures can
get well below zero for a while, or hang near freezing. Many days are cold and clear.
